Working past 100? No problem for Brenda Milner

Brenda Milner, aged 106, is a truly remarkable woman.

She was born in the UK and won a scholarship to Cambridge University to read Mathematics. Subsequently she changed direction to study psychology.

In 1941 she met her husband to be Peter while working on radar research. They married in 1944 and emigrated to Canada.

Subsequently Brenda became interested in how memory works and took a PHd in experimental psychology in 1952.

Her most famous work discovered that different parts of the brain were responsible for different aspects of memory. So a person suffering brain damage affecting their ability to form new memories could still learn new tasks involving implicit, or non conscious, learning. This was considered a breakthrough in neuroscience.

Brenda was still working on research and tutoring at the age of 100 and today her memory is pretty sharp; she can recall all the players of the Manchester City football team of the 1930s which she used to watch.
