A study by the American College of Cardiology has highlighted that men who have never married were more than twice as likely to die within five years of a heart failure diagnosis compared with women of any marital status or men who were previously married.
The study covered 6,800 American adults between 45 and 84 years old and was carried out over a ten year period.
Heart failure is a major cause of death in the UK, typically in the region of 50,000 deaths per year.
The researchers believe that the subject warrants further study, but ascribed social interaction (the presence or absence of it) as a factor in this finding.
The research is another powerful reminder of the benefits of social interaction for all of us.
