According to a study published in ‘Nature Aging’ 70 may be the new 60 for some, highlighting also that age-related decline used to be much steeper for previous generations.
The findings were based on participants in the English Longtitudinal Study of Ageing and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The work looked at a person's natural abilities in different areas, including thinking and memory (cognitive), movement and balance (locomotor), senses like hearing and vision (sensory), emotional well-being (psychological), and overall energy and strength (vitality).
According to the researchers “a 68-year-old born in 1950 had a similar capacity to a 62-year-old born a decade earlier, and those born in 1940 had better functioning than those born in 1930 or 1920. If we had compared someone born in 1950 with someone born in 1920, we would have likely observed even greater improvements.”
This is all highly encouraging, suggesting that increasing life expectancy is being accompanied by increasing health expectancy.
